Ask yourself; why is it acceptable for politicians to lie, misquote and distort facts? If we as citizens appear in the public eye in Court we have to swear to tell the truth. Why do politicians get a pass? They are servants of the public and should be held to a higher standard (tell the truth at all times and cite sources). Instead we have this constant barrage of lies and distortions and phony news programs; they all get away with it. Before every speech, politicians should take a public oath to tell the truth based on available facts. Lest you fear that the "facts" will be manufactured to ease the act of lying, there should also be a standard for quoting articles to check if they meet basic standards of objective journalism by citing sources just like any scientific journal. Here's the kicker; if the source turns out to be wrong, then the politician must publically make a correction much as a newspaper prints retractions. It's time we quit giving politicians (and SuperPACS) a free pass on lying. It's gone way too far; with potentially dire consequences for democracy that relies on an open, uncorrupted, discussion.
